Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
