Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
