RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts down to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
