The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
