Colombia's Leader Warns 'I Shall Take Up Arms Once More' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

President Trump and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the tone of their war of words, increasing tensions between the two countries following American military units struck Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Growing Threats and Allegations

Talking to journalists on Sunday, the US president threatened similar use of force against Bogotá, asserting the nation faces serious problems and “run by an unwell individual involved in producing cocaine and trafficking it to America."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest source of the narcotic, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally involved in the illicit industry.

A Strained Relationship

Colombia was historically a close partner of Washington in the struggle combating drug cartels and received cross-party backing from American politicians, however, the relationship have soured dramatically following Trump was elected.

Its drug trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations like the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members demobilised after a landmark accord.

Petro's Defiant Answer

Upon being questioned whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump responded: "It sounds good from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed in the 1990s, firmly denied these allegations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and I am not a drug trafficker," he stated.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he expressed in a post.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will become a multitude of fighters in the hills. If they capture me, whom a large part of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will release the powerful force of the nation," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

Petro spent some years as a young man participating with the radical M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed that he never participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he was involved in creating the nation's constitution in 1991 and later became a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of Bogotá before being elected the presidency.

"I pledged to never again hold a gun ... but for Colombia I would take up weapons once more," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Widespread Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the national leader's protection team had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, yet figures spanning Colombian politics have rejected the notion of a US attack on Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Strains

American authorities revoked Petro’s visa after he encouraged US military personnel to refuse any illegal orders. Later, in October, it placed asset freezes against the president, the first lady and a number of key allies.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted attacks on boats in Pacific waters near Colombia.
